Places to go in Grenada
Grenada is small enough to see in a week and rich enough to keep you busy for a month. Here's where a local would point you first.
Where the beaches are
Most visitors stay along the south-west coast, and for good reason — this is where the calm, swimmable beaches sit, all within a short drive of the airport.
Grand Anse is the famous one: two miles of soft white sand, gentle water, beach bars, and a view back to St. George's. Morne Rouge (locals call it BBC Beach) is the quieter cove just around the headland. Out by the airport, Magazine and Pink Gin beaches are long, breezy, and rarely crowded. For something wilder, La Sagesse on the south-east coast is a palm-fringed bay with a mangrove estuary and a single restaurant — the antidote to a busy beach day.
St. George's
One of the prettiest harbour towns in the Caribbean, built around a horseshoe bay. Walk the Carenage waterfront, climb to Fort George for the view over the red roofs and the sea, and time your visit for the Saturday market on Market Square — nutmeg, cocoa balls, fresh produce, and a lot of friendly haggling. The old Sendall Tunnel, cut through the hillside in 1895, still carries traffic into town.
Beyond the beaches
Drive up the west coast and the island gets greener and quieter. Gouyave is a working fishing town famous for Fish Friday — a weekly street-food night where the whole town turns out for fried jacks, lambi, and rum. Further north, Sauteurs is the site of Carib's Leap, a hard piece of the island's history. At the top end, Levera National Park has dramatic Atlantic beaches and, in nesting season (roughly March to August), leatherback turtles come ashore at night.
Carriacou & Petite Martinique
A ninety-minute ferry from St. George's, Carriacou is Grenada slowed down another notch — wooden boatbuilding villages, the perfect white sandbar of Sandy Island, and the secluded sweep of Anse La Roche. Tiny Petite Martinique beyond it is barely a square mile and almost entirely untouched. If you have a spare day and want to see the Caribbean as it was thirty years ago, go.
